The Pilates Method

The Pilates (pronounced p-la-teez) Method was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. As a sickly child, Pilates developed a system that included elements of both eastern and western forms of movement including yoga, zen and ancient Grecian and Roman regimens. By the age of 14, Pilates was in such strong physical shape, he was able to pose for anatomical charts.
During World War I, Pilates began to devise machines to help rehab bed ridden patients by using hospital beds and bed springs. These machines are still used today with in the Pilates Method.

In 1926, Pilates came to New York along with his wife Clara, and opened a studio in Manhattan. Their studio caught the attention of famous dancers and choreographers such as Martha Graham, Jerome Robbins and George Balanchine. The dance community embraced the Pilates method and still does to this day from ballerinas, modern and jazz dancers to tap dancers.

The Pilates Method helps train to move the body with ease and control, helps the body stay strong without bulk, improves flexibility, trains the body to deal with everyday stressors, and also provides the tool for realizing the intertwining of physical-mental capabilities while aiding in imbalances and weaknesses.
