Back to the Sources 5774: The Five Megilot

The Five Megilot (scrolls) – Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, are part of the third section of the Hebrew Bible: Ketubim (“Writings”) and have always been seen as stunning works of great literary value in addition to their traditional religious value. They are each associated with a particular holiday in the cycle of the Hebrew year. They are each attributed to one of the great Biblical figures. They are each profound and complex works of ageless literature. We will examine each in depth, accessing both traditional commentary and contemporary thought about these intriguing works.
