New Martial Arts Class Offered this Winter

December 11, 2012

By Dr. Neil Farber - JCC Martial Arts Teacher

I was teaching a class at a local Taekwondo school when one of my students, a north shore police officer, unexpectedly tackled me to the ground. I had no idea what to do. When we stood up, I said come at me again. This time he pulled out a gun. I had no idea what to do. I tried some fancy Taekwondo move that didn’t work.

This was more than disappointing to me. I’d trained in martial arts for over forty years. I studied Japanese Judo, Karate, and Aikido as well as Korean Taekwondo and Hapkido. I trained in stick and knife fighting in the Philippines, Muay Thai Kickboxing in Thailand, and Kung Fu in China. I was a Master Instructor with multiple black belts. Yet I really couldn’t protect myself.

In a search for realistic, practical, and effective self-defense techniques, I found the answer in the Israeli forces. I intensely studied Krav Maga, Hisardut, and Kapap – self-defense as taught in the Israeli army and police. Incorporating the most effective techniques from Asian martial arts, I came up with my own system of personal protection called Kavanah.

Kavanah can be learned quickly by anyone – men and women. There are no uniforms or fancy, non-practical moves. It’s not about competition; it’s about feeling confident and not playing the role of a victim. It’s about developing life-saving skills on the path to empowerment.  This is not for people who want to fight because they hate someone in front of them, but for people who want to protect the ones they love behind them.

One in four women are victims of attacks. Self-protection begins with knowledge of how to avoid danger. But if prevention fails, you must fight back. Kavanah teaches you the skills you need to fight back and the confidence you need to accomplish this. Combining Kavanah and my background in psychology and medical anatomy, I canshow you simple techniques to activate and maximize your personal potential.
