The changing of the seasons is often a time of renewal — a sort of “out with the old and in with the new” attitude. Spring cleaning, in particular, is the time when people clean their homes from top to bottom. While getting rid of germs is definitely a much-needed chore, this year, look beyond disinfectants, sponges, and soap and give your health a Spring cleaning of its own. Here are four ways to give your life a healthy makeover for Spring!
Experience Something New
There’s something inspiring about stepping outside of your comfort zone and breathing in the freshness of a new experience. There are so many ways to renew your regular fitness routine and possibly make a new friend in the process. Teva Wellness at the JCC has lots of exciting new programs being offered this Spring including:
• Pilates Ballet Barre
• Yoga Boot Camp and Yoga for Golfers
• Zen Cycle
• Month of Massage
Whether you’re seeking a new physical challenge, some time to meditate and relax or simply a place to explore your wellness options, the JCC’s got something for you!
Turn Your Kitchen Into a Healthy Space
Give your kitchen a healthy makeover by getting rid of processed and unhealthy products and replacing them with whole, natural foods instead. Let’s face it – cleaning your kitchen isn’t just about getting rid of dirt and grime. Perhaps you might consider supporting our local organic agriculture by joining a CSA (community supported agriculture) or visiting a local farmers market. Visit urbanecologycenter.org/what-we-do/csa-farmers.html to discover what CSA’s and farmer’s markets are in our community.
Give Your Body a Natural Detox
If you Google detox diets, you’ll most likely find that many are calorie-deprivation diets in disguise. There are lots of natural ways to cleanse the body including exercise, cutting out alcohol and refined sugars, and eating a healthy diet. I can’t think of a better time than Spring to start on this healthy track. March, after all, is National Nutrition Month! Here are a couple of naturally detoxifying foods.
•Green Tea (add a little ginger and lemon- both of which are also detoxifying)
• Dark Leafy Greens such as Kale, Spinach and Watercress
• Artichoke (roast with garlic to add more flavor and detoxifying benefits)
Visit Your Doctor
If you haven’t done so already, Spring is a great time to get your medical history checked out. Make an appointment with your ob-gyn, get checked out by your dentist and optometrist, and consider getting an annual physical. By being aware of your health and wellness early on you may prevent emergencies from happening later.
