United Way's Day of Caring at the JCC

November 6, 2013

By Shoshanah Bruesewitz, Director of Youth Services

Last month the JCC collaborated with the United Way and Miller-Coors to host a United Way Day of Caring. The United Way’s Day of Caring is a statewide effort to give bigger organizations the opportunity to volunteer and give back to local nonprofits. This year was the third year Miller-Coors participated in the United Way’s Day of Caring, and it was the first year they came to the JCC.

The seven Miller-Coors volunteers that came to the JCC this year helped run fun activities for the 42 children that attended that day’s JCC School’s Out Vacation Day. The children rotated through different stations of activities throughout the JCC that were staffed by the Miller-Coors volunteers.  The stations included Generation Move games in the Marcus Gym, a fall art project, and cooking pizzas. The kids and volunteers had fun times learning, exploring and getting to know each other.  When asked about his experience, Matt from Miller-Coors said, “Volunteering at the JCC was a great time and I really enjoyed myself.  It was nice to get away from my desk and get active playing gym games with the kids.”

The day continued and the children and volunteers parted ways.  While the children were in their next activity, Sarah Ruiz, Youth & Adult Engagement Director, and I took the volunteers on a tour of the facility. The volunteers said they were impressed with the facility and did not realize the JCC had so many programs to offer. I even over heard them comparing us to another organization saying “everyone here is much friendlier.”

The day was a lot of work to plan and organize, but it was worth it to open up the doors of the JCC.  Not only were we able to show another organization in the community what we do daily at the JCC, but we were also able to collaborate to create a fun day that our JCC children will never forget.
