Can’t Wait for Summer Camp

By Kipp Friedman

Mike Dykeman admits he was never much of a “camper-type” growing up, but he became a camp convert overnight when he sent his seven-year-old daughter Grace to the Albert & Ann Deshur JCC Rainbow Day Camp in Fredonia three years ago. Now Grace is preparing for her fourth summer at Rainbow.

“I was amazed at the whole facility,” said Mike. “The kids loved their counselors; they loved the facilities; all the sports activities; and the swimming pond (Agam). It just seems really well organized.”

Mike and Stephanie Dykeman of Bayside are just one of a number of JCC camper families that can’t wait to send their children off to summer camp. In fact, they took advantage of early registration in December just to ensure their children’s preferred placement in their camp.

“We’ve been talking about camp a lot,” said Stephanie. “It has been a long winter. Max (their 4-year-old) has been asking, “When is summer going to be here?”

Stephanie was a little more familiar with JCC camping than Mike, having attended JCC day camp in Fredonia, as well as the Steve & Shari Sadek Family Camp Interlaken JCC in Eagle River, Wis.

But she admits to feeling a little nervous this summer because Grace will be going up to Camp Interlaken for a week.  “As a mom, I’m a little nervous, but I think it will be a great learning opportunity for her to have fun with her friends.”

Stephanie said Grace will be in the Shomrim program at Rainbow and looks forward to her two-week specialty camps at Rainbow including musical theater camp and tennis camp.

For Max, this will be his first year at Gesher Adventure Camp, said Stephanie. She said Max is “a big sports kid” who looks forward to all the field trips and sports activities, plus the weekly excursions up to Rainbow Day Camp. Both Max and Grace are also enrolled in the end of summer Sports Variety Camp and Milwaukee Wave Soccer Camp.

Stephanie said choosing JCC summer camp for her children was an easy choice. “There are so many opportunities. It’s very easy for me to know where they are going to be every day. Both of us are working parents. It makes our life a lot easier.”
