About the Signature Performance

Join us for internationally acclaimed Flamenco artists Marija Temo and Kerensa DeMars for an evening of music and dance, performance will also include Milwaukee-based percussionist Mitch Shiner.

Flamenco is a Spanish art form made up of three parts: guitar playing (“guitarra”), song (“cante”), and dance (“baile”). Flamenco originated in the southern regions of Spain, but it’s thought to be influenced by many world cultures, including Latin American, Cuban, and Jewish traditions. We will explore the Jewish history and connections to this complex and beautiful art form.

About the Performers

Described as a “triple threat,” Marija Temo is widely recognized as a virtuoso classical/flamenco guitarist, flamenco vocalist, and former dancer. She performs as a soloist with symphony orchestras, in guitar concert series and festivals, as a flamenco singer/guitar accompanist, and has performed for many dignitaries and with highly-acclaimed artists. Marija currently serves as Guitar Chair at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee, WI. She offers flamenco and classical guitar classes, as well as flamenco dance classes for children and adults, and private instruction online. She plays a “Marija Temo” Model flamenco/classical(TM) hybrid, which she designed with luthier Tom Rodriguez. She has also received the endorsement of D’Addario Strings.

Kerensa DeMars is a flamenco dancer and choreographer, as well as the Director of Studio K Flamenco. She lived in Spain from 1996-2004, where she trained intensively in flamenco dance with Spain’s foremost artists. Kerensa has performed internationally and has toured with major flamenco companies in the US. She is the founding director of the San Francisco Flamenco Dance Company and, prior to relocating to Milwaukee in 2019, Kerensa served as Artistic Director of the Flamenco Room – San Francisco’s longest-running weekly flamenco show – for 15 years. In 2019, she was commissioned to create Volver, which premiered to sold-out audiences and featured a multidisciplinary collaboration with guitarist/composer Amir John Haddad ‘El Amir.’

Mitch Shiner is a drummer, vibraphonist, and composer based in Milwaukee, WI. For Mitch, music has always been about connecting with an audience. Whether on-stage or on a recording, his vibrant, high-energy style permeates every performance. Currently, Mitch serves as the Chair of Jazz & Contemporary Music at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, where he teaches percussion lessons to students of all ages. Through the WCM Connections program, Mitch teaches a World Percussion curriculum to high-need students in the Milwaukee Public School district. He also teaches jazz combos and ensembles for high school students and lifelong learners alike. Mitch is also a bandleader and a composer. Mitch Shiner and Latin Vibes has been featured in concert by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC for events like Latke Con Salsa and Carnaval de Purim.
