Bee Season by Maya Goldberg
Wednesday, March 12 • 7:00-8:00 PM
Tuesday, March 25 • 1:00-2:00 PM
This story about family, spirituality, and self-discovery has faced challenges and bans for its complex and provocative themes. The story follows nine-year-old Eliza Naumann, who has always felt ordinary in her family of high achievers. But after winning a series of spelling bees, her father, Saul, a scholar of Jewish mysticism, sees her newfound talent as a sign of spiritual promise. As Saul immerses Eliza in his mystical studies, she receives the attention once reserved for her older brother, Aaron – sending him on his own spiritual journey to fill the emotional void. Through this narrative of shifting family dynamics and spiritual exploration, Goldberg addresses deep questions of identity, purpose, and the sometimes painful pursuit of understanding oneself and one’s place within a family.
This program is presented in partnership with the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
