Milwaukee Art Museum Family Sunday for JCC Families

April 25, 2013

By Stacy Mitchell, Gan Ami Curriculum & Staff Development Director

The next few week marks an exciting opportunity for us to work through the artistic process with our Gan Ami Preschool children and Kid Center after school program – with the culmination featuring their art work will on display at the Milwaukee Art Museum on May 19thAll JCC families and staff will receive free admission between 10 am - 4 pm on this day explore the Art Museum, create projects, and see their art work on display (professionally hung by the museum’s education team!)

In addition to their individual art pieces, Gan Ami and Kids Center are excited to work together on one collaborative piece which focuses on the theme of “Around the World”.  This project will bridge our early childhood programs and our school age programs and allow all our students the opportunity to work side by side, creating masterpieces and building relationships throughout the JCC community.

We will incorporate a number of our Jewish values into this project, including:

D’rash - inquiry, interpretation or transmission

Hit’orerut - awe, awakening and gratitude

B’tzelem Elohim - divine image, we are all made in the image of G-d.

How does this artistic pricess incorporate our values?  What are the children learning from this experience that can be found in these basic human values?  These questions will be answered throughout the next few weeks as we create an experience which is a beautiful example of our Jewish identity.  We can see, regardless of our traditions, the strong connection between these values and the art that we create.

The JCC has an amazing partnership with the Milwaukee Art Museum and this is the perfect way to continue our work together. We are so thrilled to see what we create as a community, a kehillah.  Please join us at the Milwaukee Art Museum on Sunday May 19th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the Kohl’s Art Generation Family Sunday.  Simply mention that you are with the JCC and you’ll receive free admission all day.  In addition to being able to view the exhibits, there will be child-friendly art projects at stations throughout the museum and other multi-cultural fine art performances. You’ll kvell over your child’s masterpiece and know that the JCC is providing exceptional opportunities for our family of members to explore, learn, and create.
