Kids Center After School
For K5-3rd Grade with Transportation
3:00-6:00 PM (5:30 Fridays)
We are pleased to announce that Kids Center After School Programs, Youth Rec classes, and Spring Break Camps will return in March for both our members and our community! Providing a safe space for kids to grow happens every day at the J. We’re excited to begin a new spring adventure with our students and families, and look forward to building a safe environment full of values, friendship, and fun.
At the JCC, we know how hard it is to find after school options that make everyone happy. Parents want their children to be safe and engaged, while kids just want to hang out with other kids and have fun. We think Kids Center strikes that perfect balance.
From the moment the kids arrive, either on the JCC bus or walking with a staff member across the Karl Campus property, they find they have lots to explore.
Weekly schedules coincide with your school’s in-person days.
- Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri
- Monday – Thursday
- Monday – Friday
Each school group will be transported by JCC mini-bus from school to the JCC and spend their afternoon enjoying scheduled activities in 35 minute rotations that include gym, swim, art, classroom fun, and time outside in our adjacent fenced courtyard. Children will remain in designated groups throughout their afternoons in Kids Center. Parent pickups will be scheduled to ensure groups don’t mix. All children and staff will wear masks and follow physical distancing protocols for a safe and fun experience.
Parents and kids alike know that the heart of our program is our Kids Center staff. Our team of youth professionals partner with parents to help their children build confidence, resilience, responsibility, and competence while always having the children’s safety and well-being as a top priority.

Kids Center FAQs
What is Kids Center?
Kids Center is the after school program of the Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC designed for K5-3rd graders. It enables children to socialize and participate in enrichment activities outside of school in a relaxing, yet structured environment.
How are you ensuring a safe and engaging environment?
Our staff and children attending the program will be required to wear masks while inside the JCC spaces and when not able to maintain a safe physical distance during outside activities. We will clean our spaces in regular intervals including extra cleaning of the high touch surfaces. As weather permits, windows will be open in classrooms to ensure maximum air flow, and we plan to spend as much time outside as the weather permits. Participants and staff will answer our health screening questions as well as have a temperature check at the start of each day.
If a child develops a COVID-19 related symptoms (fever 100.4 or greater, shortness of breath, a new cough or rash, diarrhea, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, nausea, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, and/or vomiting) during the day, the child will be immediately removed from the classroom and moved to the designated, staffed isolation room. The parent will be notified by the administrative staff; if parent is not available immediately, emergency contacts will be used. Fever reducing medication will not be administered by Kids Center staff. Other medication still requires a physician’s note to dispense and must come in the original packaging with dosage amount. They will also need the state required medication authorization form on file, in order for us to administer any medication. If a staff member develops a COVID-19 related symptoms (with any of the same symptoms listed above), they will be sent home.
Anyone (staff member or child) with a fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or above must be isolated for a minimum of seven days after symptom onset and 72 hours after their fever resolves without fever-reducing medication. For example, if the fever and symptoms resolve on day seven, the staff member or child can return on day 10. Staff with household contacts with adults or children with COVID-19 must be quarantined for 14 days after their last household exposure. For most, this will be 14 days after the household contact with COVID-19 is released from isolation. Please see the below graphic for further clarification.
We understand that all children become sick at one time or another, especially in a school environment. Our goal is to keep the children well and to diminish the possibility of spreading communicable diseases. We appreciate parental assistance in determining the wellness of your child. Please do not send your child to school if he/she exhibits the either COVID-19 related symptoms or those of other communicable disease: fever, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, viral blisters, or rashes.
If your child arrives showing signs of being ill, they will immediately be separated from their Kids Center group and monitored. If your child becomes ill during Kids Center hours, someone must be able to pick up your child in case of an emergency. For this reason it is necessary for the JCC to be informed immediately about job changes, phone number changes, schedule changes and changes in authorized pick up contact information.
Our staff are trained in safety procedures, and emergencies will be handled accordingly. The safety and welfare of your child is our primary concern. The Registration Form asks you to list specific allergies or food restrictions as well as a notation of actions to be taken in the event of an allergic reaction.
What if my child is sick?
The staff of Kids Center are concerned about the health and safety of all the children in our care. PLEASE, KEEP YOUR CHILD AT HOME if your child has symptoms of illness. Please use our Transportation Hotline to call report your child absent, as well as list the symptoms your child has.
What happens if the classroom at my child’s school or the entire school closes or is suspended as a result of a confirmed case or exposure of COVID-19?
We will assess each situation as it occurs and make decisions in the best interest of the safety and health of our staff and other children.
What happens if there is a confirmed case or exposure of COVID-19 in my child’s Kids Center group or the whole program must close?
We are working very closely with the North Shore Health Department and with their guidance, will make decisions in the best interest of everyone’s safety and health. In the event of any closure, we will communicate via email as soon as possible.
What are Kids Center’s hours and days of service?
Kids Center operates from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm. Monday – Thursday, and until 5:30 pm on Fridays. In order to mitigate the mixing of our afterschool groups, pick up times will be scheduled to allow each group of children to remain separate from the others and allow us to follow our safe physical distance practices.
What does the typical Kids Center day look like?
3:00-4:00 pm Children arrive, snack
4:00-5:30 pm Group activity rotations which include, but are not limited to, sports, games, science and art
led by our Kids Center teachers
5:30-6:00 pm Supervised free choice activities (Kids Center closes at 5:30 pm on Fridays)
We use the entire JCC facility For our group activity rotations. Sports and games are often run outside or in the gym. We also have access to our swimming pool and you will be notified in advance if your child’s class is swimming that week!
On Fridays we celebrate Shabbat! All of our classrooms will celebrate with singing, dancing, blessings, and challah as we end our week by welcoming Shabbat.
How are the children grouped together?
Each class will be grouped based on enrollment. Please note that it is possible that your child may be grouped with children from another school. We will continue to follow our safety policies and procedures to ensure that children wear masks and remain a safe physical distance away from each other, to provide the safest experience possible.
If your scheduled pick up time does not work for you, please contact the Director of Youth Programs . We will do our best to accommodate your schedule, as long as it fits within our scheduled hours of operation.
Where will my child’s classroom be?
Each group in Kids Center will have their main classroom, where they will have snack in the afternoons and engage in fun, teacher led activities. Based on the daily scheduled, we will also use various spaces throughout the JCC, such as the Family Gym, Ritz Theatre and swimming pool, where the children will also engage in teacher led activities, games and adventures.
Will there still be a homework room?
To avoid the comingling of our groups, there will not be a separate homework room this spring. If kids have homework and their parents want them to get help, staff can offer homework support in the classroom during free play time.
Will there be snacks?
Kids Center provides nutritious, kid-friendly, kosher snacks daily. If your child has any food restrictions or allergies, please let us know. We do not allow additional snacks to be brought in due to Kashrut and allergies.
Where do I pick up my child?
Our building is located at 6255 N Santa Monica Blvd, in Whitefish bay. Pick up times will be staggered, to allow safe distances between children and adults. At this time we are not allowing anyone other than students, staff and teachers into the program. Pick ups will be done in our West parking lot, at the Marcus Pavilion entrance. Teachers will walk their classes down to the West entrance and will be dismissed to the appropriate pick-up person at their pick-up time. The times and further pick-up details will be emailed to you the Friday before the first day of your session.
Who may pick up my child at the end of the day?
On the registration form, you have listed persons authorized to pick up. If someone other than a previously designated adult is picking up your child, please notify the Director by e-mail or by phone. We will not release your child without checking photo identification. Please share the assigned pick-up time and location with whomever will be picking your child up.
What if I am late picking up my child?
The program hours of operation are 3:00pm-6:00pm (3:00pm-5:30pm Friday), except during days of early dismissal, where we will begin our program earlier on those specified days. Children must be picked up promptly. Families who pick up their child beyond the scheduled pick up time will be assessed a fee at the rate of $1.00 per minute for every minute after the program officially closes. Extenuating circumstances will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. If you know you are going to be late, please call and let us know so we (and your child) won’t worry.

Kids Center makes every effort to work with all children and families enrolled in our program. On rare occasion, circumstances may occur that bring the program to the conclusion that it cannot meet or provide for the needs of the child and or family. In this case the program reserves the right to ask you to seek a more appropriate alternative if it is determined by the program, in it’s sole discretion, that it is in the best interest of the child and the program.
