The Power of Belonging

By JCC Milwaukee January 29, 2026

There’s something powerful that happens when you walk into a place and feel it immediately: I’m welcome here.

Not because someone knows your name (though that’s always nice), but because the environment says, You matter. You are part of something.

That feeling is belonging – and it has the power to transform lives. When people feel seen and heard, they begin to feel truly accepted and connected.

As we begin 2026, the Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC is centering our work around a simple truth: belonging is essential to wellbeing. We believe community is the antidote to loneliness, creating connection that supports mental health, builds resilience, and reminds us that we don’t have to navigate life alone.

It also reflects what the JCC has always been at its best: a place where people show up for one another and where community is built on purpose.

That’s why you will see us begin to center our celebrations, communications, and storytelling on the theme: The Power of Belonging.

Belonging is more than a feeling – it’s a practice

Belonging isn’t something we hope happens. It’s something we create through the way we operate every day – through our spaces, our programs, and our culture.

At the JCC, belonging looks like:

Belonging is built through moments like these, happening quietly and consistently across our agency.

Programs that connect people

The JCC is made up of many different programs and experiences, but they share a common purpose: bringing people together in ways that strengthen community and help individuals thrive.

In fitness, aquatics, and recreation, belonging might show up in a group class where people encourage each other to celebrate progress together. It may look like friendly faces who make it easier to return – even on hard days – because you know you won’t be doing it alone.

In arts, culture, and social programs, belonging often looks like shared experience – laughter at an event, meaningful conversation in a book club, or friendships formed through regular gatherings that create consistency and community.

In early childhood and youth programs, belonging begins with trust. It’s a child feeling safe enough to explore, try new things, and build relationships. It’s parents finding support and connection with other families who understand the joys and “oys” of raising kids.

In camps, belonging becomes a life-changing experience. At JCC Rainbow Day Camp, campers build friendships, confidence, and community that stay with them long after summer ends. At Camp Interlaken JCC, that belonging also includes the chance to fully immerse in Jewish life – forming deep connections to Jewish identity and peoplehood that can be harder to access during the school year.

We take care of one another

One of the clearest experiences of belonging is care.

Belonging means we don’t just share space – we share responsibility. At the JCC, “we take care of one another” isn’t just a value; it’s part of our identity.

We see this in the work of the Jewish Community Pantry, where dignity and compassion are central. We see it in our commitment to Disability Inclusion, through programs and opportunities designed to ensure every person can participate fully and meaningfully. We see it in the generosity of donors, sponsors, and volunteers who help make programs accessible and supportive for all.

This kind of care is how community becomes real.

Our Mission, vision, and values – made visible

The JCC’s mission and values are not only lived out during major moments. They show up in everyday operations: the way we welcome people, the way we create inclusive programs, and the way we make space for everyone to participate. And they point us toward our vision of the future we are working to build – one rooted in connection and wellbeing, with space for people to engage in Jewish life in ways that feel authentic to them.

The Power of Belonging reflects our values by helping us ask:

This theme is a reminder that belonging doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when we choose it – again and again.

You Belong Here

Throughout the coming year (and beyond), you’ll see this theme reflected in stories of connection, joy, resilience, and shared purpose across our agency.

Because whether you come for a workout, a camp experience, a holiday celebration, a volunteer opportunity, or a family program…You belong here.

And when people belong, lives are strengthened – and community becomes everything it’s meant to be.
